Hellmut Gottschild

nEW 2007 Master Class Series:
June 4th–22nd. Monday–Friday
10:00AM–12:00PM. Studio 405

As part of the nEW Festival's Professional Development, a special three week master class series will be offered at the June installment of nEW. Classes are open to the public and will be led by Philadelphia Dance Artist, Hellmut Gottschild.

Gottschild's work has been informed by growing up on both sides of the Iron Curtain, being a blue collar worker, studying visual arts, dancing under Mary Wigman (her student and, later, her teaching assistant) and, in a major way, coming to America in 1968. He has been instrumental in the founding of three dance companies: Groupe Motion Berlin (Berlin 1962; performances in West Berlin, West Germany, and Yugoslavia), Group Motion Media Theater (Philadelphia 1968; performances in Philadelphia, New York, Judson Church, Jacob's Pillow, and many others) and ZeroMoving dance company (Philadelphia 1972). Particularly his work with ZeroMoving has resonated in and beyond the Philadelphia region. In 1993 he gave up ZeroMoving to concentrate on working as a solo performer. Recent work has been multi-faceted: movement theater pieces in which he employed a wide range of theatrical means, pure movement works, improvisational events, and collaborations of varying nature. In 1996, after almost thirty years of teaching at Temple University he resigned his position as a professor of dance in order to devote himself more fully to his artistic work.
