“Automatic Bastard”

Automatic Bastard is a collaboration between Karl Schappell of Philadelphia and Niall Rea, a Northern Irish director. Performed as a one-man show, Automatic Bastard is a journey inside a crazed man’s head. Inspired by elements of stand-up comedy, snuff novels, and classical modern dance, Automatic Bastard shows Schappell locked in a room telling explicitly laced stories that are both autobiographical and full-out lies. Mixing techniques borrowed from dance, theater, and European avant-garde, Schappell’s solo has been called explosive, poignant, and intimate — “A kick in the face, but in a really good way.” Automatic Bastard has been performed at The Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Belfast, Northern Ireland, and The Dublin Fringe.
